Abstract

Bird is a group of animals that can be found at almost any type of habitat.  The objective of this research is to determine the diversity of birds at the Meratus Outbound Training Adventure of Meratus Production Forest Management Unit (MPFMU), Samboja, East Kalimantan, Indonesia.  The direct observation and captured-released methods were applied in this study, which were conducted at four built transects.  One point of mist net installation was chosen for each transect. The findings revealed that 49 bird species were successfully noted, which belong to 23 families, including three vulnerable species (based on IUCN document).  Ceyx erithaca (Raja Udang Rawa) is the most common species, which was caught at four points of mist net installation.  In MPFMU, it was found that bird-diversity index was 3.74, while species richness index was 11.50 and the evenness index was 0.96. The findings indicate that when a piece of forestland is used for a specific function (for this study, outbond), we can look for other utility (bird watching) that can be used to supplement the management body's income as long as the new function does not interfere (distruct) the main one.
